What does this mean when someone quits a job?

someone went off sick with a bad back, and now he is not coming back and is 'resigning to focus on personal objectives' I have been told. What do you suppose that would mean? Is it a euphemism for something else, or has he got some master plan? I was given this news in a letter sent to me, it raved on about how great he has been.
