Is it annoying when people call your boyfriend/girlfriend "significant other" or "lover" or other euphemisms?

Maybe because I'm a little long in the tooth I find 'girlfriend' annoying. 'Significant other' or 'partner' sounds a little too domesticated. So I actually like 'lover' and don't consider it a euphemism. It says we're together and that we are a sexual relationship, which is very often minimised by 'straight' acquaintances. Plus, I find it kind of romantic (I did say I was long in the tooth).
