What is an organic safe pesticide that won't poison pets and people?

Diatomaceous earth is quite useful. It is a sediment that is mostly formed of silicates (similar to glass-shelled) organisms dead bodies. When placed where insects are it will scratch up their carapace and waxy coating, causing them to dehydrate and die.
